Barrow council has handed out a formal caution over delays in planned repair work at a pair of ‘deteriorating’ former bars in the town.
The owners of Kavannas and the Cry have been sent a section 215 warning letter after failing to arrange necessary improvements at the sites.
The bars were at one time staples of the Barrow night-time scene, but have fallen into disrepair.
The warning letter is a precursor to a section 215 notice, which can be issued requiring the situation to be remedied if it is felt the amenity of an area is being adversely affected by the condition of land or buildings.
The issuing of the warning to the owners of the two bars, both in Cornwallis Street, was revealed in an enforcement update provided in a report ahead of a borough council planning committee meeting on December 14.
The report said the bars had been in ‘deteriorating condition for some time’ and that council officers had ‘sought to engage with the owners to secure repairs’, with ‘limited improvements’ being noted.
“The properties fall within the Heritage Action Zone which gives some additional scope for negotiating improvements,” said the report.
However, it said the required works had not taken place and a warning letter had now been issued.
Both properties are up for sale – Kavannas is listed with James A Baker.
A listing for The Cry Bar on Corrie and Co says: “This is a splendid, traditional commercial premises, offered for sale on a freehold basis with vacant possession.
“The premises is redundant, having been closed for a number of years, requiring full renovation. The ground-floor areas extend to approximately 2,000 sq feet/190 sq metres.”
Offers in the region of £200,000 are being accepted for the Cry, which has been on the market for more than three years.
