Flood alerts in force in Cumbria this morning

Two flood alerts are in force in Cumbria following Storm Barra.

The flood alerts – which mean flooding is possible and be prepared – are in place for the coast from St Bees Head to Millom and the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater.

Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater

River levels are forecast to rise on the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater due to recent rainfall. Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater.

Further rainfall is expected overnight and Derwentwater is forecast to remain high until Thursday. Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through floodwater. We continue to monitor the situation.

Coast from St Bees Head to Millom

This Flood Alert has been issued due to the high tide forecast at Braystones Beach at 2pm today. Flooding is possible two hours either side of this time. Tides are expected to be higher than usual due to the forecast weather conditions during spring tides, this may cause large waves and spray overtopping on the coast.

Properties on the foreshore at Braystones, Nethertown and Coulderton are at risk. Forecasts do not currently indicate that we will be issuing further alerts or warnings following this lunchtime’s tide. Please be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.
