Carlisle Labour party has elected former city mayor, Steven Bowditch, as its new chairman.
Members met on December 9 for their monthly meeting and cast their votes for their preferred candidate to lead the local party.
Mr Bowditch said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to the position of chair of Carlisle Labour and hope to provide a steady hand of leadership.”
The former mayor has been a Labour party member since 1969 and brings a wealth of experience to the leadership of the local Carlisle Labour party.
He served as a councillor for 18 years, as Mayor of Carlisle between 2014–2015, and chair of the party in the early 2000s.
Before he retired, he was a headteacher for 21 years in Carlisle. He aims to work with members of the party to help return Labour councillors in the upcoming local authority elections in May 2022 and to work towards a future Labour government.
He said: “It is vital that we have a Labour unitary authority when we go to the polls next May. Labour care about our community and only Labour will deliver for our community.
“The outstanding result for Labour in the Currock and Upperby by-election in October shows that Labour is back in business in Carlisle. Cllr Chris Wills achieved a 57% share of the vote and has become immediately involved with community issues, starting with a road safety campaign.”
