A Cumbrian MP is to run every day next month to raise money for a mental health charity.
Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron will be raising money for South Lakes charity Wave Forward, who work alongside young people to deliver therapeutic programmes and counselling sessions.
Its work includes a 12-week ‘Discovery Programme’, piloted with Kirkbie Kendal School, that helps young people improve their own wellbeing, allowing them to better support others.
The charity also runs campaigns and events that promote mental wellbeing and tackle the stigma associated with mental ill-health.
“I’ve set myself a target of running a minimum of three miles each day, but I’m hoping to get a few half marathons in there too,” said Mr Farron.
“I’m proud to be taking on this challenge in aid of our brilliant local mental health charity Wave Forward.
“With more lockdowns and uncertainty, it’s been another really tough year on young people. So the work that charities like Wave Forward do in supporting their mental health and has never been more important.”
The Chair of Trustees at Wave Forward, Ramin Salehi said: “We’re thrilled to have Tim take on this running challenge as part of our Winter Wave of activities aimed at not just fundraising but raising awareness of how important getting outdoors and getting active is, especially in these darker, colder months, for maintaining and/or improving mental health.
“We’re excited to follow Tim’s journey through January and all the different running routes he’s going to tackle.”
