Trains are being delayed by 30 minutes or more between Armathwaite and Lazonby and Kirkoswald.
The disruption is being caused by a signalling fault which means trains are running at a reduced speed.
Network Rail is aware of the problem and says the fault is impacting a large section of the track.
Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
