A 19-hour search operation was launched by almost 80 mountain rescue team volunteers for two walkers in the Lake District.

The father and son’s last known location was Scafell Pike and they had not returned from their walk.

Mountain rescue teams were called at around 8.45pm on Wednesday.

An overnight search involving 12 Wasdale and nine Duddon and Furness mountain rescue volunteers, plus two search dogs in very poor conditions was unsuccessful.

A spokesman said: “Some areas could not be searched because of the high river levels and adverse conditions.”

At 6am yesterday, a silver incident was set up and more volunteers were called from across the county to go over ground that had already been searched, in case the walkers had moved, plus extend the search area to cover more Eskdale routes and Borrowdale, Langdale and Moasdale routes.

The walkers had managed to get themselves to Boot, having spent the night in some shelter away from the high fells.

The teams were stood down at around 3.45pm yesterday.

Teams involved included:

  • 21 Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team members
  • 14 Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team members
  • Five Kendal Mountain Rescue Team members
  • Five Keswick Mountain Rescue Team members
  • Four Penrith Mountain Rescue Team members
  • Four Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team members
  • Four Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team members
  • Four Coniston Mountain Rescue Team members
  • Nine Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team members
  • Six Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team
  • Six search dogs
  • At least six people manning bases, planning and logistical support.
