In a remarkable game Workington were helped by the fact their visitors conceded three own goals and had two men sent off.
The 5-1 home win consolidated second place for the Cumbrians, who are now just a point behind leaders Marine.
Although they had always been the better side, and he was pleased with the result, manager Chris Willcock wasn’t happy with the performance.
“I thought we should have done a lot better when they went down to nine men. I wouldn’t have liked to be playing up front because they didn’t get enough ball.
“We can certainly play a lot better than that, although beforehand the incentive was to win and close the gap on Marine – which we did,” said Willcock.
They had gone ahead on 22 minutes when Ruben Jerome headed home after Dave Symington’s free-kick had initially been headed back by Kyle Harrison.
Four minutes later Glossop were level after home skipper Conor Tinnion was adjudged to have brought down Sidi Sanogo-Fofana when he slid in to put the ball behind. Jamie Rainford hammered home the spot kick.
Workington responded by regaining the lead a minute later. Symington’s low cross cannoned off Lee Wilshaw under pressure from Jerome and squeezed into the bottom corner.
Then on 37 minutes a Symington corner was headed into his own net by Ekow Coker as Jerome and Conor Gaul both put him under pressure.
Five minutes into the second half Brad Hubbold robbed a defender and went through to plant the ball past Harry Allen, who had earlier made fine saves to deny Jerome and Symington.
Glossop were reduced to nine men when Sam Barratt was shown a straight red on the hour and a few minutes letter Keaton Mulvey had to walk after treceicing a second yellow.
Workington didn’t really press home their advantage and only added one more, five minutes from time, when the unfortunate Coker turned home a low cross from Jerome.
