A new house, a new car or a luxury holiday abroad.
Three ideas for what many people would buy first if they won big on the lottery.
But that was far from the case for Carlisle couple Ian and Sandra Black, when on January 13 Ian scooped the top prize of £2 million on The National Lottery’s Monopoly Deluxe Scratchcard.
Ian Black, 61, had just finished his night shift and was driving home when he stopped to pick up a scratchcard from the Esso garage on Wigton Road in Carlisle.
“We got our dog booked in for an operation,” said Ian, outlining the couple’s main priority when they won the cash.
“That’s the first thing. When the money went in, we were in Gretna. I bought myself a few bits and pieces clothes-wise.
“And then on the way back, Sandra bought herself a car.”
She described her love for her old car Betty, but Ian insisted she bought a new one.
“It was a Volvo XC90, I like my 4x4s,” said Sandra.
Ian and Sandra are not exactly sure how they’ll spend the money, but they have begun to make plans.
“We have and haven’t (decided what they’ll do with the money). We want to take a lot of advice first and try and make the money work for not just us but the kids and grandkids and their grandkids hopefully,” said Ian.
“We want to try and build a little business up and keep it running and generate some more income. Try and keep it in the bank.”
