A Carlisle man who won £2 million on a National Lottery scratchcard says he quit his job 10 minutes after the win was confirmed.
Ian Black, 61, had just finished his night shift and was driving home when he stopped to pick up a scratchcard from the Esso garage on Wigton Road in Carlisle.
When he scratched the card in the forecourt of the garage shortly after 6am on January 13, his life changed forever.
He scooped the top prize of £2 million on The National Lottery’s Monopoly Deluxe Scratchcard.
It was an easy decision for Ian to make in the aftermath of the win.
“Ten minutes after I got the confirmation, I quit,” said Ian, who worked at the Pirelli factory in Carlisle.
“My phone call went like this. I phoned them up and said I won’t be in tonight, in fact, I won’t be in the rest of the week.
“He asked me what was going on. I said, ‘In fact, I’m not coming back.’
“He was asking me what was wrong with me and what was going on.
“‘I just won £2 million on a scratchcard this morning,’ I said.
“‘Oh my god, oh my god, I’m so jealous, but I’m so chuffed,’ those were his words.
“It’s fantastic, fantastic.”
But how did it feel to quit his job?
“Brilliant,” he says, punching the air with one hand, holding a glass of prosecco in the other.
“He didn’t go to sleep until the following morning,” interjected his wife, Sandra.
“I honestly didn’t sleep for two days/two and a half days,” added Ian.
