Workington Reds players asked to step up to the plate

With two of the League’s top strikers sidelined through injury it’s no surprise that Workington boss Chris Willcock is looking for others to chip in on the goal-scoring.

Scott Allison and Nico Evangelinos have been the NPL West’s most consistent scorers over the last two years and have been a big miss to Willcock’s armoury.

Consequently he’s asking others in the side to step up to the plate and deliver more goals – with already positive signs of a response.

Dav Symington is now Reds’ top scorer with nine League goals while Brad Carroll has scored in each of the last two games, a 4-2 win at 1874 Northwich and 2-0 at City of Liverpool.

“I have challenged Dav to get high in double figures with his goals this season and he is delivering. I tell people in the game about his ability with both feet and how he can score from 30 yards with the power he generates.

“That was a special finish against City of Liverpool. I thought he was going to take it with his right but then he cuts back and fires in a shot like that with his left,” said he manager.

Symington, like the majority of the Reds squad, has suffered absences this season but is enjoying a good run with no injury set-backs.

Carroll, the club’s vice-captain put in an outstanding shift on Tuesday, scoring the second goal and generally contributing in full to a thoroughly competent Workington performance.

“Brad gave a typical Brads performance. He covers every blade of grass and does the ugly work that others don’t like doing,” said Willcock.

Three times vice captain Carroll had to receive treatment but each time he got up to battle on, conscious of the fact that Reds had lost their captain Conor Tinnion to a hamstring injury.

Tinnion will be assessed before Saturday’s home game with Newcastle Town and Willcock is hopeful that he won’t face too long a spell on the side-lines.

“He was out for five to six weeks the last time he suffered a hamstring problem but initial thoughts are this one isn’t #as bad and it might only be a fortnight. We will just have to wait and see,” said the Reds boss.
