After a positive start at leaders Forest Green, Carlisle United found out just why their hosts are going to win League Two.
The Gloucestershire side looked vulnerable early on but a bright Carlisle opening couldn’t be maintained and the leaders were comfortable winners in the end.
Carlisle’s solid defensive form, and their recent unbeaten run had suggested they could perhaps cause an upset, but it was not to be.
Carlisle passed and moved the ball well early on and on two occasions almost got their two pacey strikers Omari Patrick and Tyrese Omotoye in on goal but each time they were closed down.
The two almost combined for the opener but Omotoye’s low cross was smashed cleare as Patrick moved in for the kill.
But the promising start was undone on 16 minutes after an angled run from Wilson saw Cadden drive the ball into the box and unfortunately Morgan Feeney stretched a leg out to slide the ball into the bottom corner for an own goal.
Carlisle were still seeing most of the ball but weren’t getting into positions where they could seriously threaten the home goal.
Carlisle looked comfortable but they were caught short on 52 minutes when Young was picked out in acres of space.
He wound his way into the box, and luck was on his side when his shot on the run ricocheted towards Matt Stevens who made no mistake.
Stevens then somehow conspired to miss when he had time to get on the end of a cross from Wilson. His ten-yard header was always too high.
Jamille Matt made sure of the points on 77 minutes when a one-touch move involving Aitchison and Stevens left him on his own and with just Howard to beat. He kept it low as he hammered his shot home.
