Copeland Council is offering litter picking kits to every community in the borough.

Part of the £159,000 government-funded Welcome Back scheme, the initiative encourages people to take pride in their surroundings, and make it easier to access the right equipment for a clean-up.

The 20 kits include litter pickers, gloves, high visibility vests, first aid kits, bin bags, bag rings, hand sanitiser and a holdall to store the kit in.

They have been offered to all town and parish councils, and any community groups or individuals will be able to borrow them.

Copeland’s Elected Mayor, Mike Starkie, said: “This is just one more great scheme that allows our residents to take pride in our amazing borough. We all want our surroundings to be litter-free, and when everyone plays a part it really makes a difference. This will make it much easier for everyone to access the right equipment.”

The Welcome Back fund aims to boost the look and feel of high streets and seaside towns. The funding helps councils prepare for the safe return of shoppers and tourists.

It builds on the £50m Reopening High Street Safely Fund allocated to councils in 2020. The Welcome Back fund is part of the European Regional Development Fund.
