Toy lovers’ delight at Mitchells next vintage and antiques sale

Toy lovers rejoice! There’s a host of goodies on offer at Mitchells’ next sale.

The Cockermouth auction house’s vintage and antique toy sale, on Thursday February 10, includes dolls, die-cast models, train sets, military model and figure sets, teddy bears and sci-fi and themed toys.   

Highlights amongst the dolls include a late 19th century or early 20th century bisque shoulder head doll, by Bahr & Proschild, measuring 50cm tall, with an estimate of £80-£120 and a large 19th century wax over composition shoulder head doll, with brown coloured wig and wearing purple clothing which could make £100-£150. 

A late 19th or early 20th century French SFBJ bisque head doll, size 8, with impressed marks to the back of the head has an estimate £40-£60. There are also several good quality dolls’ houses and furniture for sale and a Victorian dapple grey rocking horse on later stand could make £400-£600.

Amongst several bears for sale is an early 20th century Steiff teddy bear, with FF button and boot button eyes, which could sell for £200-£250 and an early 20th century American teddy bear with a rare woven integral material nose, unique to the Ideal Toy Company, with an auction estimate of £100-£150. 

Model locomotives & train sets for sale include a Hornby 00 Orient Express boxed train set with an estimate of £150-£200, a Hornby Stephenson G100 live steam rocket locomotive set with track valued at £120-£150 and a Graham Farish N gauge Class A4 Sir Nigel Gresley locomotive and tender worth £50-£80. 

A Hornby 00 gauge DCC Ready LNER Class A4 Mallard locomotive and tender has an estimate of £50-£80. Among several track layouts for sale is a detailed N gauge track layout featuring a Meccano Company Limited model factory which should sell for £40-£60. 


Lots with a military theme include a group of six Britain’s special collector’s edition box sets of different British Armies in India with an estimate of £100-£150. 

A group of nine boxed Matchbox 1/76 scale model kits of military vehicles should make £50-£80 among 30 or more other lots of model kit groups.  A Britain’s set 1322, Carden Lloyd Tank with the Royal Tank Corps and Officer set has an estimate of £40-£60.

A group of three Skybirds scale model figure sets comprising No.1 Royal Air Force set, No.2 Royal Flying Corps set, and ‘Irvin Air Chute’ set should make £50-£80. Other notable lots include a collection of about 500 Del Prado soldiers and figures to be sold in groups of 50 with an estimate of £150-£250 per lot. 

A Paul’s Model Art Minichamps boxed Valentino Rossi Collection Honda motorbike together with a boxed Valentino Rossi figure should sell for £40-£60. 

A vintage wooden pinball machine, raised on tapering legs also has an estimate £40-£60.

Among a selection of static engines are two stationary engines bearing a plaque inscribed W Foreman & Sons, one on a black metal base with an estimate of £50-£80 and the other valued at £40-£60.
