A Cumbrian brewery launched eight months ago has been awarded a prestigious national prize.
Lakes Brew Co, based in Kendal, won the Overall National Champion of the Bottle/Can Competition at SIBA National Independent Beer Awards with its NE Session IPA.
It also scooped Regional Gold Awards at the same competition for DDH Pale and NZ Pilsner in Keg and NE Session IPA received Silver in the Keg competition.
“Judges had a tough job separating the pack as the standard was extremely high once again. The winners from the SIBA competition are officially the best independent craft beers in the UK, something brewers should be extremely proud of,” said Roy Allkin, SIBA chairman.

Head brewer and co-founder Matt Clarke said: “We have only been brewing eight months so to win this prestigious national beer award is just amazing. It feels great to be recognised in this way and I’m glad the judges enjoyed the beer in such a hotly contested category.”
After being made redundant from Hawkshead Brewery at the beginning of lockdown restrictions in March 2020, and three of his colleagues – Michelle Gay, Steve Ricketts and Paul Sheldon – reunited as Lakes Brew Co.
