A man was found seriously injured in a Workington back lane in the early hours.

Police were called at 1.21am on Monday, March 28, to the lane off Milburn Street when the man was found by passers-by.

The 34-year-old victim, of West Cumbria, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment. He remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Investigations were immediately launched and two people were quickly arrested – a man, 46, and a woman, 39, both of Workington.

They were both arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They remain in custody.

Another man, 34, was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and a man, 51, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Both remain in police custody.

Enquiries continue and detectives are appealing for anyone with information or who may have heard or seen any altercation or disturbance in the area to come forward.

You can report online at www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it –  or call 101 quoting log 11 of March 28.
