Workington Town slip to another defeat

James Glover scores for York (Ben Challis)

Workington Town slipped to another Betfred Championship defeat at Derwent Park when they lost 44-18 to York City Knights.

The damage had been done in the first-half when York built a 20-0 and looked to be well set.

But entering the final quarter of the game Town had fought their way back and at 18-26 there was just the chance of claiming those elusive first Championship points.

The Knights, however, finished strongly and three late tries gave them a comfortable win.

Town’s indiscipline hadn’t helped their cause in the first-half and York were able to dominate possession.

As usual Town got off to a shocking start with the Knights taking the lead as early as the second minute.

In their first attack of the game Liam Harris ghosted through the Town defence to touchdown, and added the conversion himself.

Town did enjoy some good moments in attack, created by set-ending kicks from Jamie Doran but each time York dealt with them well.

When York built up a head of steam again, after a penalty, they scored again on 13 minutes as Jordan Thompson powered over from close range for an unconverted try.

Town then had a good spell again with Doran pulling the strings but the York defence was strong and there was no way through.

On 20 minutes York scored fine third try. Will Jubb did the spadework with a driving run down the short side, found Levi Edwards in support and he put Joe Brown over for the touchdown which again went unconverted.

The fourth try for the Knights came on 28 minutes when a grubber from Harris looked to be going out of play but was superbly kept alive by O’Hagan and Levi Edwards finished off. Harris converted.

Town needed to score first in the second half and they did after just three minutes to take some heart.

Matty Henson went in from dummy half and Carl Forber put over the conversion.

But four minutes later the deficit was back up to 20 points. Brad Ward did well to keep the ball in play and his off-load was taken by James Glover who went over. Harris converted.

Town did better with the discipline in the second-half and two tries in the space of three minute put them right in contention.

Henson repeated his earlier heroics when he went over from acting half-back on 57 minutes and then a fine break by Luke Broadbent was capitalised upon by Forber who went over under the sticks. Forber converted both tries.

But after getting themselves back in the game, Town were outdone by two quick tries from the visitors.

On 64 minutes Jubb spun the ball to Harris and the half-back was again able to slice through the Town defence, adding the extras afterwards.

Then three minutes later Jubb powered over under the sticks and Harris converted.

The victory was wrapped-up two minutes from time when Glover exchanged passes with Ward before going over behind the posts and Harris converted.
