The Downies have taken the 2022 series of Workington’s mass football game.
Uppies and Downies, which has been played in the town for hundreds of years, held its last game tonight and Dan Fryer was victorious.
The game, which has no rules and no organising committee, is held on Good Friday, Easter Tuesday and the following Saturday.
Downie Aaron Lancaster took Good Friday for the Downies, Jamie Friel regained Uppie pride on Easter Tuesday, leaving it all to play for in Saturday’s game.
It was a match with no quarter given – and the main scrum spending at least 45 minutes in the freezing River Derwent, trying to get their hands on the ball, illuminated by car headlights.
Thrown off at 6.30pm from the concrete bridge on The Cloffocks, it was finally hailed by Dan at just around 10.40pm.
More photos to come from Tuesday’s game and tonight’s match….keep your eyes peeled!
