Hard work by firefighters in Barrow helped to stop a wildfire from spreading to a nearby water treatment works.
A crew from Walney Fire Station attended Salthouse Mills shortly before 3pm yesterday and found a fire spreading rapidly through the reed bed and being fanned by a good northerly wind.
The crew asked for further assistance from Barrow, Ulverston, Broughton, Millom and a wildfire unit from Windermere.
An area of 500m2 was destroyed but hard work by firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to the water treatment works and beyond.
Firefighters were at the scene for five hours and 45 minutes.
