A Wigton man has admitted assaulting his heavily pregnant partner the day before she was due to give birth.
Carl Harry Johnstone, 27, of West Road, admitted two charges when he appeared at Carlisle magistrates’ court earlier today.
Johnstone pleaded guilty to a common assault on the woman and also to causing an estimated £500 damage to a television which belonged to her.
Prosecutor George Shelley told the court how the pair were in bed at her address on January 9 — she was due to give birth a day later.
“Out of nowhere”, Johnstone became verbally aggressive about his feelings towards the woman, saying he wasn’t going to attend the birth.
He twice punched a television and, said Mr Shelley, then “goes for her”, prompting her to run down the stairs to try and get away. Johnstone grabbed the woman’s collar, causing her to be in fear of violence, having earlier warned he would “smash” her face in. She was left visibly distressed and upset.
District Judge John Temperley heard the baby had since been born, although the pair’s relationship was over.
He asked for the preparation of a probation service pre-sentence report before handing down the punishment. After being told this would take several weeks, District Judge Temperley adjourned the case.
Johnstone was granted conditional bail and is due to be sentenced at the magistrates’ court on May 16.
