Windscale’s final game of the Wearside League season produced a disappointing end to the Atoms recent fine run of form.
They visited old-foes Wolviston in the return fixture from the first game of the season and their hosts’ 3-0 win gives them a chance of promotion to the Northern League.
The first period produced a close contest with some excellent play from both sides with Chris Fairless giving Wolviston a 1-0 lead at the break.
Wolviston added to their advantage in the 53rd minute with a strike from Elliott Pledger.
Shortly after this, the Atoms were further disadvantaged when keeper Andrew Richardson had to be stretchered from the field with a knee injury.
It was Atoms’ stalwart Ryan Byrne who took up the challenge between the sticks and was coping fairly well until a Jake Stott goal ultimately decided the final outcome at 3-0.
Windscale can now look back on a season that will see them finish the League programme in eighth position, an excellent result following an indifferent start.
Everyone associated with the team, from Steve Fawcett and Mike McDonald, the joint team managers, all the players who represented the club and the support staff are looking forward to building on this for the 2022/23 season.
