Roadworks will begin on Kirkstone Pass on Monday.
Cumbria County Council wants to improve the safety of the A592 and Metcalfe Plant Hire will carry out survey work on the road for around two weeks.
Work will take place between Brothers Water on the northern end and Hird Wood on the southern end, a distance of 4.3 miles and the survey work will take place at specific points along the road.
Work is expected to take place between 8am and 5pm daily, and traffic management will be implemented at survey locations using stop/go boards to manage traffic.
The workers will survey highway drainage systems to help inform what work is needed as part of the planned safety scheme. As a result, maintenance and other future road safety-related works can be designed more efficiently, the county council said.
The county council said: “This survey work is being planned to avoid the school half-term holidays and will be undertaken in the shortest time possible. If there proves to be more work or the planned work takes longer than expected, the initial two-week period for the work may need to be extended.
“The county council apologises in advance for any disruption this work may cause, and there may be a few delays, but they will do everything possible to minimise disruptions. The council would also like to thank local residents, businesses and visitors for their patience while improvements to road safety are made.”
