More than £15,000 has now been raised for Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, as part of an epic cycling challenge in memory of  a six-year-old Eden boy who died as a result of a tragic accident.

Willy Bonner, who lives at Brougham, near Penrith — along with friends Gordon Mackenzie, Martin Wood and Peter Ballingall — is cycing around 1,800km, from northern France to northern Spain at the end of this month.

The cycling team, with a combined age of 267 years, are cycling along a route known as La Velodyssee to raise money for the children’s hospice in memory of Willy’s grandson.

Willy’s grandson was cared for by the hospice after his death in its Butterfly Suite.

By the end of day three, the cycling team, calling themselves The Old Duffers — but Still Game!, had covered 265km of the 1,800km to be cycled.

The team said: “The total amount raised so far inclusive of Gift Aid is £14,993! inclusive of  donations received from residents of Brittany as we cycled the Brest – Nantes canal section of La Velodyssee.

“No major problems other than Willy having a pedal problem quickly remedied by an excellent shop in Pontivy.”
