Two people have been appointed to new roles to support unpaid carers at a north Cumbrian hospital.

The new carer health coordinators are working with Carer Support Eden to help carers at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.

Helen Russell and Chrissie Chambers will be based at the hospital, working with the discharge team.

Helen said: “We are liaising with the discharge team to identify people who are unpaid carers and to help them navigate the discharge process and provide support.”

Chrissie said: “When someone is taken into hospital, their needs when they are discharged and sent home may be very different. Their partner, child or friend may find their role has become one of an Unpaid Carer, due to changes in their health and mobility, and we are here to help signpost them to where they can find help and support, both practical and financial.”

The new Carer Support Eden team are based in Carlisle hospital and work on its wards.

Chief executive of Carer Support Eden, Dani Leslie, said: “This is a new role for us, which will enable us to help people as soon as they become unpaid carers.

“Becoming an unpaid carer can be sudden and we are now there to help support people.”
