A gang of men carrying weapons during Appleby Horse Fair were stopped from violence by police – and officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

At around 1.15pm on Saturday, the large group of men, carrying sticks and other weapons, marched down Long Marton Road onto Battlebarrow.

More than 40 officers formed a human barricade and stopped them getting on to The Sands and Appleby town centre.

Two men, aged 37 and 25, were arrested following the incident on suspicion of violent disorder. They have since been released on bail.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed this group making their way down Long Marton Road and/or onto Battlebarrow to contact police.

Officers are also keen to hear from anyone with video footage, including CCTV, dashcam or footage recorded on a mobile phone.

People are asked to contact police, referencing incident 175 of 11 June, 2022. Report online at www.cumbria.police.uk/reportit, call 101or contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
