Julie presents Jeff Peet the first winner with her dad’s trophy the David Coulthard Wasps Spirit Award at Cockermouth Rugby Union club.

Cockermouth rugby union club had a very special trophy to hand out at their annual presentation night.

It was in memory of club president and former captain David ‘Claggy’ Coulthard who died earlier this year.

Coach Chris Wright said: “The Spirit Award is a new addition to the presentation, remembering, and in honour of late club legend David ‘Claggy’ Coulthard, who we sadly lost this year.

“David’s daughter Julie, who goes above and beyond for the club week in week out, was on hand to present the award to Jeff Peet who is a thoroughly deserving winner embodying all that is good about the Wasps and grassroots rugby.”

Wright himself is standing down as head coach, something that had been planned for a while and not related to Cockermouth’s reassignment by the RFU to the Cumbria League.

Work and family commitments mean he will be stepping away from the coaching role but will still be involved on the development side with the committee.

He said: “We are looking for a new head coach which is a great opportunity to further develop a fantastic group of players.

“Coaching courses will be available and funded; assistant coaches are in place and a senior players group in place.

“We have off-field support and a quality physio with understanding of RFU activate programme, and also have a Veo camera in operation.”

The new head coach will be expected to plan and lead two training sessions per week starting in July. They will manage match days and lead on team selection.

The new coach will be expected to foster an excellent relationship with the colts team and junior coaches.
