Eden Valley Hospice’s Morecambe Bay Walk

People who sign up for a charity Morecambe Bay Walk in aid of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice this summer will get a free T-shirt!

See the beautiful Morecambe Bay from a new perspective as the hospice’s popular Morecambe Bay Walk returns this summer.

The wonderful experience will offer you unbeatable views of the Morecambe Bay, Lancashire coastline and the Lake District. The eight-mile sponsored walk, which is hosted by The Guide Over Sands Trust, will take approximately three hours to complete.

By taking part in the walk you will be ensuring local people receive vital and specialist care when they need it the most. Every step you take, mile you complete and pound you raise will help local people with life-limiting illnesses.

When is the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw Morecambe Bay Walk?

It takes place on Saturday, July 9, from 1pm.

What should I expect?

The art of walking successfully across Morecambe Bay is to be prepared for a few eventualities.

Changeable weather and a varying terrain will be encountered. First and foremost you should be able to walk 7 or 8 miles.

Underfoot, Arnside to the shore includes sand, footpaths, lanes and marshland. The bulk of the crossing is flat sand often rippled and sometimes covered in water.

Half way across you will navigate the Kent River where you can expect the average depth of up to 2ft (60cm) for a distance of some 50m. The final leg of the walk is over marsh to Kent’s Bank station; this is a clear pathway but may sometimes be slippery.

Your fundraising

We suggest that you pledge a minimum sponsorship of £30 per adult participant, or whatever your feel is achievable for you.

Eden Valley Hospice is a charity dedicated to providing specialist care for adults in north Cumbria and south west Scotland who have life-limiting conditions. Our specialist services, which include end of life care and symptom control, are delivered by a multi-professional team (doctors, nurses, counsellors, social workers, spiritual care team, therapists) who have recognised training in palliative care and for whom palliative care is their core speciality. Care and support also extends to relatives and carers.

Jigsaw provides day-to-day care, support and activities to children and young people living with a life limiting-illness. Our care is provided in a home from home setting and each young person’s care is personalised towards their own needs. While Jigsaw is based in Carlisle, we support families from right across Cumbria and beyond.

It costs more than £4 million a year to run the charity (that’s Eden Valley Hospice & Jigsaw) and we rely on the help and support provided by the local community we serve, to offer the highest quality care to those with life-limiting conditions. Around 75 per cent (more than £3 million) of that must be fundraised with the local NHS trust providing the other 25 per cent.
