Workington’s library is doing its bit for Ukrainian refugees

Refugees fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have received support from the Cumbria County Council operated Workington Library.

Allerdale has welcomed 57 refugees from Ukraine in recent months, 26 of which are children.

36 hosts have opened their homes to the families fleeing the violence of the War in Ukraine.

The refugees are being supported by Cumbria County Council Health and Wellbeing Team.

And Workington Library, operated by the council, is also doing its part.

Along with five other main libraries across the county, the facility on Oxford Street is supporting the Homes for Ukraine scheme by carrying out DBS checks as part of the host arrival process.

Potential hosts of those fleeing the conflict are being invited to make an appointment or drop-in to Workington Library for their checks.

Newly arrived Ukrainians have also attended the English Cafe at the library and have accessed the facilities.

A sheet summarising all of the useful resources has been made available at all of Allerdale’s libraries for people in that position.
