People and businesses are being asked to have their say on how Carlisle city centre’s Market Square and Greenmarket could look in the future.
Part of a wider £2.7 million plan which includes investment in the Citadel, Caldew Riverside and Carlisle Railway Station, it aims to rejuvenate the city centre and improve the visitor experience. It is paid for by the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.
A two-week public consultation starts on Monday, and will include an exhibition showcasing ideas.
Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council are working together to deliver a reimagined public square, which would prioritise pedestrian movement and encourage residents, workers and visitors to stay longer in the city centre and bring new leisure and cultural uses to the heart of Carlisle.
This consultation is the first in a series of events that aim to inform and gain feedback on proposals.
Councillor Marilyn Bowman, portfolio holder for economy, enterprise and housing, said: “This is your opportunity to have a say in the future of Market Square and the Greenmarket, so we encourage residents and businesses to get involved and give their comments.
“This is the first stage of consultation and views will help draw together the design for the areas. These will form part of the next stage of consultation in autumn this year.”
Events will be held at the Greenmarket on:
- Monday 11 July and Monday 18 July, 10am-5pm.
- Tuesday 12 July and Tuesday 19 July, (morning only).
- Friday 15 July and Thursday 21 July, 10am-4pm.
There will be an open-air exhibition with staff on hand to answer any questions.
There will be a separate business drop-in event on Monday July 11 between 6pm and 7pm and a late drop-in for the public on Monday July 18 from 6pm to 7pm in the Assembly Room, Old Town Hall.
