More than 70 businesses in Cockermouth are taking part in the first ever Cockermouth Charities Weekend.
The event, which is organised by Cockermouth & District Chamber of Trade takes place on Friday and Saturday.
From the mayor busking in his chains and a human fruit machine organised by Rotary club members, to a doggy photo booth, bra bank, and a lifeboat on Station Street, as well as marathon runners, mountain rescue and Cumbria Blood Bike stalls, and the usual raffles, prize draws and donation pots, it’s an event which is uniting the town.
Each business, shop or venue has selected its own worthy cause, local or national, then raise money for that charity over the weekend. That could be by giving a donation for each item sold, having collection tins at the till area or hosting prize draws and raffles.
At Cartmell Shepherd Solicitors, there’s a bumper raffle to win an amazing hamper. The Trout Hotel is hosting a prize draw to win a two-night stay.
Alongside the business involvement, the chamber has invited charities like mountain rescue and Cumbria Blood Bikes to set up a stall in the town to raise money themselves.
Andrew Marshall, chairman of Cockermouth & District Chamber of Trade, said: “The whole ethos of this event is that Cockermouth is giving something back to lots of charities after a very difficult couple of years.
“Some of them have seen their donations plummet as they haven’t been able to hold or visit events.
“We want to make a difference to these organisations which support others, save lives or make life a little easier for those in need. I hope people will come and join the fun, hopefully win something lovely, and spare a few pence – or pounds – for some amazing charities.”
