Wedding barn plan for West Cumbrian village farm

Plans have been resubmitted for a wedding barn at a farm in a West Cumbrian village.

Far Branthwaite Edge Farm in Ullock wants to create a 30m barn next to The Raise to host events and has lodged an application with Allerdale council.

The farm wants to diversify and first submitted an application in April last year, but it was refused because councillors felt it was “an inappropriate diversification” and its scale and design would have a harmful impact on the character of the area and the historic environment.

The proposal has since been tweaked after consultation with planning officers. The new-build wedding barn, plus associated facilities and a 27-space car park are part of the plans.

In supporting statements, agent Rural Futures said: “We are aware that Allerdale council prefer the reuse of existing buildings rather than new development in the countryside.

“However, the traditional barn at The Raise is not practical for the intended use. The external building footprint is 150sq m which is not sufficient to incorporate the facilities required for the wedding business.

“Improvements to the access have remained as the previous application which were accepted by Cumbria Highways as an acceptable scheme.”

Guests to the wedding barn will be encouraged to use shared mini buses and taxis.

The agent said that materials have been carefully selected to create a building which reflected the rural location and maintained the aesthetic of an agricultural building.

It added: “The design of the wedding barn is predicated on the creation of a building which is harmonious with the rural setting and the existing traditional buildings.”
