Carlisle City collected their first win in the Northern League’s First Division last night after coming from behind.
They trailed hosts Thornaby 1-0 at half-time but two goals inside four minutes midway through the second half earned them the points.
Thornaby finished third in the table last season and have some good players, particularly up front.
City manager Jim Nichols said: “I thought we did well in the first half an hour and had a couple of good opportunities which we couldn’t take.
“They had three lively forwards who caused us problems so when they took the lead we were under a bit of pressure and did well to get through to half-time.
“We know what our strengths are though. We keep our shape well, are organised and limit opportunities for teams and it’s served us well.”
Steven Roberts fired the home side ahead on 37 minutes and City were under pressure until the break.
Injuries forced a couple of changes at half-time and City were able to pick-up the pace again after the resumption.
A Dan Kirkup header pulled them level on 73 minutes and Josh Simpson grabbed the winner four minutes later.
Nichols said: “It was a very good performance to come away with the points and sets us up for Saturday’s FA Cup trip to West Auckland.
“The club has not played in the competition for 42 years so it’s a big day for us and everyone is looking forward to the occasion.
“West Auckland are an established First Division side so it will be a tough task but there’s no reason why we can’t win again.”
West Auckland lost 4-1 at home to Guisborough on Tuesday night, which was their first game of the season.
