Carlisle Cycling Association closed their season with sunshine and lots of smiles at the last of their evening race events.
For the series finale the organisers had designed a programme to appeal to a wide range of riders and it paid off, with over 50 cyclists ranging from children as young as five to Category 1 adults participating.
The Youth races were well attended, with wins in the boys’ races going to Charlie Threw, Mason Bulfin, Josh Stewart, Cobey Stewart and Mitchell Stewart, with Freya Cochrane, Megan Pool, Izzy Barbour, Boo Williams and Zoe Martin topping the girls’ podiums.
The adults had two fast and furious races with strong fields in both as riders from the north east and Scotland battled it out with local riders.
Scot Lewis Martin was dominant, taking the win in both races from his compatriot Jamie Mackenzie. Third place in the second race went to Hugo Lutz-Atkinson who is returning to form after injury.
Beacon Wheelers’ Neil Withington came in third in the first race, sealing his position at the top of the Association’s Summer League for Category 2 and above riders.
Popular local rider Dougie Pratt won the Category 4 League with up and coming north east rider Daniel Saba taking the Category 3 title.
Adult league winners received prizes donated by Cyclewise of Cockermouth and Whinlatter while children’s prizes were donated by Bespoke VeloTech of Maryport, as well as the association.
Several special awards were also made. Border City Wheelers member Ian Wrightson was named Volunteer of the Year and Matthew Shortman was the Most Promising Newcomer.
Carlisle teen Joshua Sefton, new to competitive cycling this year, was awarded the Coaches Award for Endeavour and Beacon Wheelers’ youngster Luke Davison was clearly very pleased with his award for Most Improved Rider of the series.
