Cumberland County League kicks off this weekend

The Cumberland County League starts again on Saturday with three fixtures in each division kicking off the new season.

In the Premier Division the two newly promoted teams both start their campaigns with Whitehaven Miners returning to the top tier for the first time since 2017.

They travel to Gosforth while UniSun Athletic start with a home game against Cockermouth.

In the other opening day fixture Maryport Athletic face former champions Wigton, who last won the title in 2019.

The top division looks wide open this year with last season’s winners Pirelli and third placed Workington Athletic both folding.

Aspatria will be looking to clinch their first league title for several years having missed out by a single point last season and will undoubtedly be the pre-season favourites although they have not got an opening day fixture.

In Division One two new sides are at home on opening day with Bransty taking on Silloth, following a year out of the league, and the newly-formed Whitehaven Miners Reserves side facing Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves.

Carlisle City Development will be looking to bounce back at the first opportunity after relegation from the Premier Division last season.

Having picked up several players from Pirelli they will be strong contenders for the title and an immediate return to the top division, They face Whitehaven Amateurs Reserves at the Sheepmount.

In a late change of heart Northbank have again resigned from the League. They had reversed their earlier decision to resign and were looking to take part, but have now had to pull out.

Fixtures

  • Premier Division:  Gosforth v Whitehaven Miners; Maryport Athletic v Wigton Harriers; UniSun Athletic v Cockermouth.
  • Division One: Bransty Rangers v Silloth; Carlisle City Development v Whitehaven AFC Reserves; Whitehaven Miners Reserves v Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves.
