Calls are being made for Grange-over-Sands’ ambulance service to be housed within the fire station.
An ambulance has been operating in Grange-over-Sands and the Cartmel Peninsula from its base on Kent Banks Road for 20 years.
But the building will be unavailable to the North West Ambulance Service from next March and there are fears it will put the service in jeopardy
Janet Willis, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member Fire and Rescue, said: “North West Ambulance Service has visited Grange Fire Station to assess its suitability for the co-location of the ambulance service.
“Cumbria County Council are happy for it to use the building and we are waiting for it to approach us formally.”
He said: “This seems like the best solution possible for everyone involved, however, North West Ambulance Service has been dragging its feet so much that we are at risk of losing the service altogether. Losing Grange ambulance station would cost lives as it would lead to even longer response times.”
He said he had written to the North West Ambulance Service to ask for answers because he felt its inaction was “absolutely disgraceful”.
