Sunday will be a big day for the Wigton club as they contest their first-ever Higson Cup final.
The Lowmoor Road side will be taking on holders Workington at Whitehaven’s Playground, and go there after one of their stand-out performances of the season.
Wigton made a season’s best 296-9 against Millom with three of the younger players excelling with the bat.
Wicket keeper Matthew Reed made his maiden century; Lewis Little was caught on the boundary for 94 going for three figures in the grand manner and brother Kieran Little made 55.
Unfortunately Lewis won’t be playing in the final as he’s flown to Australia for six months of cricket Down Under.
Wigton won loads of trophies in the old Cumberland Senior League but this is their first chance to land serious silverware in the Cumbria League.
The Wigton team for the final is: Kieron Little, George Johnstone, Mikey Hill, Chris Hodgson, Matty Reed, John Reed, George Spark, Matthew Hodgson, Cameron McGuinness, Glenn Liddle, Jonny Honeyman.
Opponents Workington have tended to specialise recently in the shorter, knock-out formats.
They won the Higson Cup again last season and this year, for the second time in a row have been beaten in the final of the Robin Dunn Memorial Trophy for T20 by Furness.
Finding a settled batting line-up has been a problem for Matthew Lowden’s side because on their day they can put out one of the best bowling attacks in the League.
Workington will line-up: Jake Daniel, Adam Chambers, Kristian Moffat, Lahiru Dilshan, Tom Fox, Matthew Lowden, David Pearce, Sam Bates, Lewis Hull, Regan Jackson, Ben Scott.
Meanwhile in the League, Carlisle go into the last five Premier Division games with a five point lead over Cockermouth and seven over Keswick.
Third-placed Keswick have it in their own hands to snatch the title as they have to play Carlisle and Cockermouth – and both at Fitz Park.
The first of those clashes comes tomorrow when Cockermouth make the short trip for the crucial game of the day.
Carlisle entertain struggling Haverigg whose recent form has sucked them into the relegation battle.
Professional Michael Slack is still not fit enough to return from a broken toe although he will be hoping to be back soon, and also in time to lead Cumbria in the NCCA Trophy final against Berkshire on August 28.
For tomorrow Carlisle have booked the Burnley professional Ockert Erasmus.
They had booked South African Erasmus two weeks ago at Cleator, but like the rest of the programme the game was washed out.
Last week Carlisle enjoyed a convincing win at reigning champions Furness when they were not able to book a sub pro. For Saturday Erasmus comes in for Henry Walker.
Wigton warm-up for their Cup final at relegation-threatened Dalton while Workington have a date at Furness, the team they beat to reach the final.
Cleator v Egremont and Millom v Whitehaven complete the Premier Division fixtures.
