Regan Jackson, a teenage pace bowler with Workington, will get a crack at bowling against South African Test batsmen today.
The 18-year-old has been invited to Old Trafford to take part in a net session with the South African squad preparing for the Second Test against England which starts there on Thursday.
Jackson, who was in the Workington side which retained the Higson Cup against Wigton on Sunday, has already represented Cumbria’s T20 side twice. He was also a member of the county side which played Lancashire earlier this month in a Showcase game at Sedbergh.
The youngster, who works as an IT technician, was recently spotted by a South African player who mentioned him to a member of the touring party.
His father Paul said: “I think he liked the look of him and as they apparently often have promising young bowlers in the nets against them Regan got an invite.”
He’s not the first Cumbrian youngster to be invited to bowl in the nets against a touring side.
Ahead of their one-off Test with England earlier in the summer India arranged a similar net and Josh Stirling, the Carlisle off spinner had the experience of bowling against their front-line batsmen.
Regan is a third generation cricketer following dad Paul (British Steel and Workington) and grand-father Lawrence (Egremont and British Steel).
