A man died after falling into Ullswater while paddleboarding, an inquest has heard.

Search teams were deployed after 26-year-old Olumide Favour Giwa, of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, was reported to have got into difficulties in the water at around 1.10pm on Sunday, August 7.

The location given was in the vicinity of Aira Point, close to the Ullswater ‘Steamers’ landing pier. A friend was reported to have contacted the emergency services to raise the alarm.

Those involved in the four-day search included the coastguard, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, Maryport Inshore Rescue and members of both Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team and the North West Underwater Search Team. Sonar equipment and aircraft — to sweep the area — were used during the operation, while the public were asked to avoid the area as the search was carried out.

The man’s family were made aware of developments in the search, and supported by specialist police officers.

A Cumbria Constabulary spokesman confirmed on August 11 that a body had been recovered from the water. “The death is not being treated as suspicious,” the spokesman confirmed.

And inquest into Mr Giwa’s death has been formally opened by Robert Cohen at the county’s coroners’ court in Cockermouth.

“The circumstances reported to the court is that Mr Giwa was participating in paddleboarding on Ullswater, fell into the water and that his body was discovered some time later.”

A statement had been provided by Mr Giwa’s step-father confirming formal identification, the hearing was told.

Mr Cohen adjourned the inquest to a preliminary date of February 16, 2023.
