The funeral of the Queen will be held on Monday, September 19.
She will lie in state for four days at Westminster Abbey and people will be allowed to pay their respects.
Today, her oak coffin will be carried by her gamekeepers to a hearse today that will take her to the city today. It will be driven slowly to the Palace of Holyroodhouse for 4pm.
The Queen will initially lay in state at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh for 24 hours from tomorrow afternoon and on Tuesday, she will be flown to London, accompanied by her daughter, the Princess Royal. She will be taken to Westminster Hall on Wednesday, and the Queen will lie in state from Thursday.
A period of national mourning will last until the day of the state funeral, the government has announced. The Royal Family will observe a further period of mourning for seven days afterwards.
The day of the funeral will be a bank holiday, it has been confirmed.
Today, Royal Proclamations will be made across the county to declare Charles III as king.
How will the Proclamation be made in Cumbria?
The High Sheriff of Cumbria, Alan McViety, will make the proclamation outside The Courts, on English Street in Carlisle very shortly after noon tomorrow and the public are invited to attend.
Timings for the county Proclamation in Carlisle are as follows:
11.50am: County dignitaries will make their way to outside The Courts, English Street.
Shortly after noon:
- Bugler plays a fanfare
- HM Lord-Lieutenant to offer words of introduction
- The High Sheriff reads the Proclamation of the Accession
- At the end of the Proclamation
- High Sheriff: God save the King
- Official Guests repeat: God save the King
- All present join in saying: God save the King
- Band to play one verse of the national anthem
- High Sheriff to call for three cheers for His Majesty the King
- High Sheriff to hand copies of the Proclamation to district mayors/chairmen
- Bugler plays a fanfare
12:20pm: Dignitaries process, led by The Lord-Lieutenant, High Sheriff and mayor of Carlisle to the Market Cross where the Carlisle City Proclamation will be made by the city mayor Mike Mitchelson.
The Proclamations will be followed by a service at Carlisle Cathedral.
A proclamation will then be made in each district.
Allerdale
In Allerdale, the Proclamation will be made at 12.30pm outside Allerdale House in Workington.
The Proclamation will be made by Allerdale mayor Allan Daniels, who will be joined by local leaders, dignitaries and council officers.
Members of the public are welcome to attend the event which will be held outside at the flagpole, and are asked to arrive from noon.
Barrow
The Royal Proclamation will take place outside Barrow Town Hall at 12.30pm.
12.30pm: Dignitaries in attendance will arrive outside of Barrow Town Hall, in Duke Street. Deputy mayor of Barrow, Therese Assouad, will read the Proclamation of the Accession and the national anthem will be played.
Copeland
Mayor Mike Starkie will read the Proclamation in St Nicholas’ Gardens in Whitehaven, at 12.30pm. This will follow a short procession from the Green Market gazebo.
Eden
Chairman of Eden District Council, Douglas Banks, will read the Proclamation from the steps of Penrith Town Hall at 12.30pm.
South Lakeland
A proclamation will be made in South Lakeland outside Kendal Town Hall at 12.30pm.
