Familiar face when Workington Reds take on Bootle

Workington will see a familiar face when they take the field at Bootle for their NPL West game.

Their hosts have just signed Jacques Welsh who actually played against the Reds on Tuesday night for Runcorn Linnets when they won 2-1 in the FA Trophy tie at Borough Park.

Jacques didn’t score but he twice tested home keeper Jim Atkinson with efforts which needed decent saves to keep out.

Welsh had joined the Linnets last season from Flint Town and was a key member of the Runcorn side which reached the NPL West play-offs, going out in the final to Workington’s conquerors Marine.

Reds boss Danny Grainger will be looking for his side to repeat the performance they produced in their last League outing, a 3-0 win at Ramsbottom ten days ago.

He made five changes for the FA Trophy tie with the Linnets to rest players feeling knocks after that Ramsbottom win, and several of them could be back in the starting line-up.

“I think we ran out of steam later in the game and that’s down to lads not having much game time recently. I want us to get back to where we were at before the FA Trophy because those two performances were more like what I am looking for,” said Grainger.

Bootle have recently appointed former Barrow favourite Steve McNulty as manager and he has started with successive League wins against Trafford and City of Liverpool.

Workington’s former defender Ekow Coker, who played at the start of the season, has signed for Glossop North End.

It’s a repeat move for Coker as he played a dozen games for the Hillmen on loan from Macclesfield last season invluding one at Workington when he conceded two own goals.

Workington will be up against Coker on November 5 when they are due to travel to Glossop.

Meanwhile, subject to League approval, Workington will play at home next Saturday against Skelmersdale in a postponed NPL West fixture.

They should have played on Tuesday but the FA Trophy tie with Runcorn Linnets took preference. However after Reds’ defeat and Skems subsequent defeat at Widnes in the Trophy left both teams with a free weekend on September 24 the date of the next round.
