Whitehaven Rugby League club has condemned racist abuse which has been reported at the LEL Arena over the last two months of the season.

The Championship club has initiated an investigation and stress that there will be bans for those found to have been responsible.

A club statement said: “Unfortunately over the final two months the club has received reports of racial and other abuse towards opposing team’s players and officials.

“The club is now conducting investigations on these claims and anyone found to be in breach of the club’s and the RFL’s protocol will be issued with a ban that we as a club do see fit.

“The club fully supports the RFL’s Tackle It Campaign against all form of discrimination including racism and while we know our fans can be passionate there is no room for this unacceptable behaviour which can, and will, negatively affect the club financially and by causing compliance issues.”

It asked anyone with information about the claims to email [email protected]

It added: “All information will be kept strictly confidential and would urge any member of our fantastic supporter base who have any concerns or information regarding any incidents to please contact us.”
