Kendal still looking for first win

Kendal are still looking for their first win after three games in Regional One North West.

But there’s was a more promising feel about their latest effort, a 34-24 defeat at Blackburn who had won their previous two games, both away.

Kendal made a bright start and after forcing a third minute penalty Glen Weightman gave them the lead from the subsequent kick.

Five minutes later Blackburn took the lead from the first try of the game. From a line-out catch and drive the home forwards battered away until a gap opened for the score and a conversion.

What had started positively for Kendal was now going rapidly downhill as from the restart kick Blackburn moved the ball smartly before being awarded a penalty.

They took a scrum and with the help of some poor Kendal tackling the line was crossed for a second try with the conversion attempt striking a post.

In the 13th minute Blackburn scored a third try which was converted for a 19-3 lead.

It even got worse for Kendal as in the 19th minute the home side built on a penalty to score their bonus point try – and it seemed Kendal were in for a hefty defeat.

But that was not the case and for the final hour Kendal out-scored their hosts after tightening their defence, and the previously good Blackburn passing went astray where previously it had stuck impressively.

Kendal scored their first try after 25 minutes when Steven Nelson picked up at the back of a scrum and fed Lewis Kincart.

Using winger Dan Shorrock as a decoy he dummied to pass twice before diving over and Weightman added the extras from the touchline.

Kendal had a couple of opportunities to get closer to their hosts but couldn’t take them, even when Blackburn had a player yellow-carded.

Blackburn weren’t prepared to gamble when they were awarded a penalty in injury time, but knocked it over for a 27-10 lead at the break.

Seven minutes after the re-start Kendal scored again when Weightman showed great feet to weave his way through the home defence for a well-taken try which he converted.

It wasn’t until the 66th minute that Blackburn were able to add to their tally with their only points of the second half to make it 34-17.

Five minutes from the end Kendal added a third try which was converted by Weightman.

From a quickly taken penalty by Kincart good handling by Mark Carruthers and Ingacio Cisint, put Dini Noyo over in the corner.
