A host of events will take place this month to celebrate Great Big Green Week.
From September 24 to October 2, community groups across the county will hold events with the aim of drawing attention to the need for urgent action on climate and nature.
Groups from Arnside to Workington are taking part in the nationwide campaign to showcase actions we need to take to tackle climate change, and create a better world now, and for the next generation.
Events taking place in Cumbria include activities with young people, film screenings, litter picks, an apple-pressing day, farmers’ markets, green drinks, crafting sessions, repair cafes, and sessions on how to limit the impact of the cost of living crisis through reducing energy costs.
Many of the local groups taking part are linked to the Cumbria Sustainability Network administered by Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS) and are part of Zero Carbon Cumbria, a county-wide partnership aiming to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2037.
Tim Coombe, of Sustainable Brampton, said: “Great Big Green Week is a super opportunity to encourage people to take positive steps to live more sustainably by changing ingrained behaviour patterns, by shopping locally, by repairing stuff, by growing our own produce, by caring actively for nature and by becoming better educated about how to improve the planet for future generations to enjoy too.”
Helen Attewell, Cumbria Sustainability Network co-ordinator, added: “After experiencing the unprecedented temperatures affecting Britain this summer, it’s clear that action on climate change is urgent and necessary. We can all do our bit to help, and communities across Cumbria have come up with a range of fun and interesting activities to bring people together and focus on this issue.
“Great Big Green Week will be bigger and better than ever this year. All the local events we know about are listed on the CAfS website, and we really would encourage everyone to get involved.”
Great Big Green Week is being organised by The Climate Coalition, the UK’s largest group of people dedicated to action against climate change, whose members include the National Trust, WWF, Women’s Institute, Oxfam, and RSPB.
