Wigton continued their fine start to the season and moved to the top of the County League’s Premier Division following a 2-0 win away to Workington Development.
Jonny Studholme opened the scoring when his scuffed shot from Dan Martos’ cross found its way past the keeper after 20 minutes.
Reds Development then controlled possession to create several half chances but couldn’t force an equaliser and were made to suffer when Studholme notched his second of the game.
The Wigton midfielder controlled the ball on his chest on the edge of the area before smashing a volley into the top corner to seal the win.
Gosforth earned their first win of the season as they were 3-2 winners at home to Aspatria.
Jack Denwood put Gosforth 1-0 up in the first half with a composed finish following neat interplay. Andrew Bulman and Joe Dorgan added their names to the scoresheet in the second half to make it 3-0 to Gosforth before a late onslaught from Aspatria.
Mally Graham converted two penalties as Aspatria pushed for an equaliser but Gosforth held out for the three points.
Cockermouth and Whitehaven Miners ended honours even at Highfield as the home team battled back from 2-0 down.
Ryan Doran and Alan Cardy put Miners 2-0 up inside the first six minutes to leave Cockermouth reeling but Conor Cooke and Mark Campbell made it 2-2 for Cockermouth’s first point of the season.
UniSun Athletic gained revenge for last week as they travelled to Maryport where the two teams faced off for the second time in as many weeks.
UniSun started well and Shane Dorward smashed home a volley from inside the area to put the Carlisle team into the lead.
Maryport equalised just after half time when Ethan Weir turned in a low cross from the right from six yards out.
Then both teams hit the woodwork as they searched for a winner and the game could have gone either way but UniSun won it in the 92nd minute when George Carter rifled home the winner from inside the area.
In Division One there were just two games as Windscale v Silloth was postponed due to Silloth’s request for a two week grace period following a tough start to the season for the young team.
Silloth have been a fixture in the league for many years and hopefully they can put things in place which will allow them to continue.
Carlisle City continued their excellent start to the season with their fourth win from 4 games as they beat Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves 4-2 at Gillford Park.
Nathan Johnston, Tom Hickey and Ellis Dickinson scored for City and an own goal made it four. Jamie Martin hit a double for Celtic but it wasn’t enough to stop City from going six points clear at the top.
In the Whitehaven derby it was Amateurs Reserves who comfortably came out on top against Miners Reserves.
Amateurs ran out 11-1 winners with goals from Travis Fyfe (4), Will Starkey (2), Stu Lace, Paul Wright, Nathan McGlennon, Owen Woodburn and Shane Tyson. Kian Sim notched Miners’ consolation.
The league now takes a back seat for two weeks as cup competitions begin. Next week there are seven Conway Cup fixtures and on the 8th October the Cumberland County Cup begins.
1st October fixtures: Whitehaven Amateurs v Windscale; Cockermouth v Whitehaven Miners Reserves; Cleator Moor Celtic v UniSun Athletic; Whitehaven Miners v Aspatria;
Bransty Rangers v Gosforth; Wigton Harriers v Maryport Athletic; Carlisle City Development v Workington Reserves.
