Barrow Sixth Form College students Callum Birnie and Daniel Jewell scooped scholarships from Barrow and District Association of Engineers towards their university studies

Two Barrow Sixth Form College students have scooped top scholarships.

Callum Birnie won the top prize of £1,250 and his friend Daniel Jewell secured the runner up prize of £625 from Barrow and District Association of Engineers.

Callum, who studied A-levels in physics, maths, further maths and computer science at the Rating Lane campus, is preparing to study a degree in computer science at Lancaster University.

During his time at sixth form he studied an extra-curricular online course in computer engineering with the University of Manchester and has completed over 1,000 extra past paper questions in computer science his own time.

Daniel, who aspires to work in the automotive engineering industry, secured A*A*A*C grades in his A-levels in business, maths, further maths and physics. He completed an online virtual work experience designing a rover vehicle during lockdown and is now off to Loughborough University to study a degree in automotive engineering.

The scholarship from BDAE is open to students from across the area who aspire to a career in engineering or an engineering-related field and enrol on full-time university courses. The former Dowdales School students were announced as the winners at the association’s latest lecture.

Furness College’s director of curriculum for student experience and academic progress Helen Gibson said they were both very worthy winners.

“Callum and Daniel are both self-motivated, conscientious and well-rounded students who deserve recognition for both their academic achievement and contribution to college life. I’m delighted for them as they took the time to apply for this award and, as a result, they go off to university with some extra spending money in their pockets!”
