Whitehaven Cricket Club was packed to the rafters for the adults and Under-15s annual presentation night.
Club chairman Jonty Stewart was the master of ceremonies with Jim Folley, father of the club’s late professional Ian Folley, as guest of honour.
The club president Ike Park was also there to hand out some of the trophies.
Steart gave a brief synopsis of the season, highlighting the fact that Whitehaven continue to field four adult teams every week.
He also praised the first team’s run of good form towards the end of the season which saw them climb from a point where they were stranded at the foot of the League to eventually finish ninth of the 12 clubs.
The second team was beaten in the final of the Vigodny Cup and finished second in the League despite only losing one game.
Unfortunately they had three games rained off to finish a point behind Vickerstown who only lost one fixture to the weather.
The Thirds won the Burton Cup by beating the Fourths in the final. Opening bowler Andrew Cameron was voted first team Players’ Player of the Year. His bowling had been exemplary and this, combined with several hard-hitting innings, made him the obvious choice.
Jason Spires took the Second team’s Players’ Player of the Year with Luke Blaney receiving the award for the Thirds and Tom Green for the Fourths.
Green had an incredible all-round season and would be a regular for the Firsts or Seconds were it not for his work commitments.
The main Junior awards were also much deserved.
Maddie Wood collected the George Rumney Memorial trophy for best young bowler.
Josh Foster took the Alan Parker Memorial Trophy for most promising all-rounder; Billy Thompson won the Ian Folley Memorial Trophy for most promising young player and Kian Larmour won the Hugh Jones Trophy for Young Player of the Year.
Thompson, Foster, Wood and Larmour also won several other awards at Under-15s and adult level.
Other winners on the night were Steve Holliday, Nathan Carmichael, Ben Cavaghan, Cody Meagan, Finlay McCourt, Harley Bowness, Charlie Ashford, Charlie Minshaw, Adam McGarry, Dom Chambers and Shane Tyson.
Kenny Stewart’s incredible hard work was also recognised. He spends hours on the outfield and it is probably in the best condition it has ever been, and he was the popular winner of Club Person of the Year.
Tea ladies Lesley Sanczuk, Elaine Pattinson, Charlotte Wood, Lynn Blaney, Mary McCormick, Ann Stewart, Susan and Emma Thompson were each presented with a bouquet of flowers wich recognised the players’ appreciation of all their hard work.
Teas are no longer compulsory in League cricket but Whitehaven’s ladies ensure that the tradition of providing teas is still very much in vogue at the Playground.
The Junior presentation night which will cover All Stars to Under 13s will be held on Friday in the club.
