Penrith greengrocers closing after more than 25 years in town

Starfruits in Penrith

An independent greengrocer is closing down after more than 25 years in Penrith.

Owner David Whipp, who took over the Angel Square-based Starfruits in 2007, said they just could not compete with the supermarkets.

Unlike the supermarkets who are putting all the prices of produce down, Mr Whipp said they could not do that.

“We are driven by the price of produce which is going up,” he said.

Normally, the shop have been able to make enough during the summer to cover for the winter, but this year they have not been able to do that.

“It looks like we will be closed either tonight or tomorrow night. We only carry two or three days of stock anyway,” said Mr Whipp.

The closure of Starfruits means that Rooting 4 U, in Penrith’s Devonshire Arcade, owned by Nev and Hazel Waugh, is now the only independent greengrocers remaining in town.
