Cockermouth Rugby Union Club has been given a £14,000 boost from Sport England.
The grant will be used to repair pitches, damaged during last year’s storms, and enhance the club’s coaching programmes in the community.
Chris Wright, head of facility and club development, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment which means we have upgraded the quality of our pitches to match the quality of our players across the ages.
“It will enhance our social provision and reach out to a new pool of players.”

As well as improving the playing surfaces it means they will be in better condition to deal with the wetter weather in the future.
Also a new outdoor social structure will be important on match days for spectators, but also for the club’s partners who run a school holiday sports club.
Wright added: “The coaching grants are fantastic for the progression and sustainability of Cockermouth RUFC with club coaches now deployed in Cockermouth School and local primary schools to promote girls’ rugby.
“There’s no better time to do this with the great work of the England Roses team out in the 2022 World Cup.
“Secondly club coaches will be delivering social touch rugby opportunities for people of all ages and abilities but with a focus on promoting the game to the older population.

“These sessions will take place on Friday evenings starting next March.”
The storm relief funding was worth £6,609 and the coaching programmes are worth £7,600.
Sport England is a public body and invests up to £300 million National Lottery and government money each year in projects and programmes that help people get active and play sport.
