Carlisle’s Flag American Football team, the Border City Centurions, will be playing a double-header when they host their Division 1 home tournament at Austin Friars on Sunday.
On the day some of the biggest and best teams in the North of England will be travelling into the city to play from Manchester, Salford, the Wirral and Lancashire to play each other in Division 1 North A of the National Flag Football League.
Kicking off at 11am the Centurions will first go up against Salford, before taking on Lancashire at 12.15pm.
While the Salford team come with a great pedigree, the Centurions will be hoping to add a home win to their road trip earlier this year when they turned the Salfordians over.
There will also be very strong opposition when they play Lancashire, as a team who has not lost a game all season and is packed with current GB players.
However, the Centurions hope to pull off a win at home and leave a smudge on the otherwise unblemished record of the Lanc Bombers in 2026.
The day before, in Newcastle, the Centurions’ Premiership team are looking to secure a post-season play-off spot if they can end the afternoon victorious.
Sitting comfortably in second overall spot in the Prem, the Cents are eying an opportunity to setup a showdown in the last game of the year against league leaders Newcastle to also be crowned champions for the season – ahead of the knockout rounds.
Both sides have everything to play for with the season heading into its final month or regular games, further adding to the great success the club has shown since joining the league in 2023.
Flag American Football is the Olympic format of the gridiron game, set to debut in Los Angeles in 2028. It’s a non-contact, high skill and speed format of the sport. It’s also one of the fastest growing sports in the world with over two million global players.
The Border City Centurions play in Division 1 and the Premiership of the National Flag Football League which is organised by the British American Football Association. They’re proudly sponsored by Carlisle’s own Bendles Solicitors and Kingmoor Park – the Centurions also represent Diabetes UK’s Lorraine Hough Tribute Fund.
The Centurions offer free youth Flag Football sessions every week in partnership with Carlisle Youth Zone from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Wednesdays.
Flag Football is a full inclusive and mixed sport with opportunities for everyone 12 years old and above to play.
