Former Workington Comets star Simon Stead has been celebrating a major achievement as a team boss.
His Sheffield side sealed their first ever top-flight silverware on Wednesday as they were crowned 2022 Premiership League Cup winners.
The Tigers rounded off the season with a 50-34 home win over King’s Lynn and a 101-73 aggregate triumph following victory on the road in Norfolk last month.
The start time was delayed by 50 minutes to enable extra track work to be carried out following further heavy afternoon downpours.
And there were plenty of tight tussles and entertaining battles once the action did commence, before more rain ended the tie a race early following Heat 14.
Adam Ellis (10), Tobiasz Musielak (9+1) and Connor Mountain (9+1) led the way for the Tigers whilst former Workington rider Richard Lawson gave an outstanding display for the Stars to score 14, and Richie Worrall added 9+1.
Stead rode for Workington in 2003 and 2004 and while at the Comets won the Premier League Pairs Championship with Carl Stoneherwer.
After the meeting he said: “I think we’ve got what we deserved. We’ve been consistently brilliant all season so the fact that we’ve got a bit of silverware to show for our efforts come the end of the year is what we deserve.
“I think we’ve got to say a big thanks to the track staff, the fans for turning up, the riders for giving it 110 per cent and the referee (Chris Durno) for being on side. November speedway is never going to be pretty, but the track actually came really good and we saw some great racing out there.”
