A pioneering Cumbrian independent brewery is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
Hawkshead Brewery, based in Staveley, was founded in 2002 by former BBC foreign correspondent Alex Brodie and initially operated from a barn. Rapid expansion saw it move to its current home in Staveley Mill Yard. It now employs 20 local people brewing beer and pouring perfect pints in its on-site pub, the Beer Hall.
To mark the anniversary, lead brewer Mark Jackson has created a limited edition beer, 20 Years of Cracking Beers, which will be launched at the brewery when the first cask is tapped on November 18.
Mark said: “We’re proud of all the beers we’ve made over the years, so the name seemed appropriate! Most of the beer will be going to local real ale pubs but we’ve also hand bottled some for people to enjoy at home.”
Fellow brewer Robin Cousins said: “I’ve lived in Staveley all my life and worked for Hawkshead for 15 years so I’ll definitely be supping a few to celebrate the birthday milestone.”
A small number of bottles featuring a stunning photo of Kentmere by local photographer Martin Lawrence will also be available.
